Price Data Not Updating on MT4 Charts? Here’s How to Get Real-Time Quotes Again

You open MetaTrader 4 to analyze the market—and your charts haven’t moved in minutes. Prices look outdated, indicators don’t match the live feed, and your trading decisions feel like guessing. Frustrating? Absolutely.

But most MT4 price update issues are easily fixed once you know where to look.

Why Price Data Stops Updating

  • Frozen or disconnected charts: MT4 sometimes fails to refresh automatically.

  • Inactive subscription to symbol: Some charts lose real-time quotes if the symbol isn’t actively subscribed.

  • Server connection issues: Disruptions can prevent live price streaming.

  • Timeframe glitches: Certain timeframe changes may not trigger updates.

  • Corrupted symbol or chart settings: MT4 may fail to display live data properly.

How to Fix Outdated MT4 Charts

1. Refresh Charts Manually

  • Right-click the chart → Refresh

  • This forces MT4 to pull the latest data from the server

2. Check Symbol Subscription

  • Open Market Watch → Right-click the symbol → Show All

  • Ensure your charted symbols are subscribed for live data

3. Reconnect to Server

  • Look at the Connection Status in the bottom-right corner

  • If disconnected, press File → Login to Trade Account and re-enter credentials

4. Toggle Timeframes

  • Switching timeframes (e.g., M1 → M5 → M1) can trigger a chart refresh

  • Useful for symbols that seem “stuck”

5. Remove and Re-Add Symbols

  • In Market Watch, remove the symbol, then re-add it

  • This clears potential corruption and forces real-time updates

Maintain Chart Accuracy

Accurate charts are the foundation of any trading strategy. Regularly check for frozen or outdated quotes and apply these fixes before making decisions.
